We ended up visiting village after village, tracking down the artisans who were still making Tile Cat(Wǎ Māo) by hand.
Their hands were rough and worn from clay and kiln fire—but every single Tile Cat(Wǎ Māo) they shaped had a stubborn kind of spirit shining through its eyes.
We asked, “Why not make more of them, so more people could know about them?”
The craftsman rubbed the clay off his hands and said, “Thing is, they’re too heavy and too fragile. They just can’t travel far.”
